INDUSTRY NEWS REVIEW - BY MATTHEW ZITO

A new startup focused around highly scalable clustered database architectures: http://www.techcrunch.com/2008/05/19/google-

While there are many companies in the VLDB field, from the traditional database vendors, such as Oracle, Teradata, and DB2, to newer appliance companies, such as Netezza, and Datallegro, it is interesting to see that serious data storage and analytics is still a problem for many organizations today.

Oracle Mix https://mix.oracle.com/ – a website where the community can vote on various Oracle topics, such as what sessions to have at Oracle World 2008 – it’s not clear just how much they’re listening, but if Oracle really is listening more to their customers, this is a great way to have an impact.

The World Needs BSM Lite: http://www.networkworld.com/community/node/27818 - BSM is one of the buzzwords that gets tossed around in the automation space, and this article not only provides a good intro to BSM overall, it makes a case that trying to boil the ocean with a massive BSM solution could be overkill for your environment.

Yahoo! has the largest database in the world: http://www.computerworld.com/action/article.do?command=

– In this case, Yahoo! actually acquired a company and used its tech to modify PostgreSQL to scale and support their workloads and data model.  Probably not applicable to the majority of midsize or even large organizations, but it demonstrates the amount of effort people will invest to try to get the best information out of their data.

A Call for DBA Blunders: http://sqlblog.com/blogs/kalen_delaney/archive/2008/05/15/dba-

- On the lighter side, some amusing stories on horrible DBA mistakes people have made.  It is also interesting to note how many of those problems could have been mitigated if those processes were automated.
