ReserveAmerica Manages Oracle Infrastructure with GridApp Clarity Software
To simplify and streamline its database operations, ReserveAmerica, a leading camping reservation and campground management solutions provider, specializing in complete reservations solutions, stand-alone call center/database management tools, online reservations solutions and park software solutions, has deployed GridApp's Clarity software to centrally administer heterogeneous database environments and combine the power of disparate database servers into a grid network. GridApp centralizes the management of geographically distributed databases, providing incremental scalability with the ability to mix-and-match server architectures and dynamically allocate resources based on application business requirements.
ReserveAmerica was particularly interested "in moving away from a core big box infrastructure," Rob Gardos, CEO of GridApp, told 5 Minute Briefing "They were very interested in embracing a more grid-like infrastructure for their database." Although large, the most notable aspect of the implementation for ReserveAmerica, which processes bookings for more than 150,000 campsites, was its scope because "what they wanted to do technically was very sophisticated," said Gardos.
The project encompassed three locations-one in Canada, one in New York, and one in California. "Within the production facility in New York, they had two distinct database environments with two distinct back-end storages, real-time replication between production and standby, and then asynchronous replication going from New York to California." The technologies involved included "Oracle RAC, 10g, ASM--fairly new technologies--and then there was replication using [Oracle] Dataguard for and replicating from a SAN environment to a NAS environment and then back to a SAN environment."
Implemented earlier this year, the GridApp solution automates the management of ReserveAmerica's database infrastructure and online reservation system to help ensure consistent levels of availability and sub-zero response times. ReserveAmerica has great variability in traffic, explained Gardos, noting, for example, "a certain time comes and everybody is looking to reserve a campsite at the Grand Canyon. The system is intelligent enough to take capacity where it is not being utilized to handle these peaks in load." The GridApp solution also supports disaster recovery by enabling ReserveAmerica to replicate data in real time between production, standby, and recovery databases across multiple locations. "Certainly it was a very complex implementation," said Gardos. But, he noted, "The end result for them was tremendous cost savings and improved manageability."
